Hi and welcome! Sorry you're here for Alice. 18 and a half years old, wow! Did the vet say what stage she's in?

I'm in a similar position with my guy, Pookey. He really likes Fancy Feast and his phosphorus is creeping up. Vet is recommending the kidney diet but being a diabetic too that doesn't work. I've been feeding more Weruva actually. He doesn't like it as much as Fancy Feast but it seems to work well enough and is lower in phos. When we recheck labs in a few months I'm going to see how the phosphorus is trending and then decide about a binder. I kind of came to the same conclusion that you did, keeping them eating being the most important and doing what I can as far as ingredients go.

Somewhat related, there is some debate anyways about when and if you should feed a kidney diet. Just with the protein restriction concern.

The only other comments I think I'd have right now is if you can get that lab data for the last few labs, it would be good to see it plotted out in one spot to see if there is anything else creeping up. I keep Pookey's in a spreadsheet like this one. And of course keep an eye on hydration, a few water bowls and water in the food if she'll tolerate it.

Hi Tim and Pookey! thank you so much, I was reading your updates before I posted and you made me decide to post! I have have one lab for her, I will get that up as soon as I can manage that. I hated to post the results like I did but I don't have another way at the moment. My plan was to bring our spectrometer home this weekend and check her specific gravity at home and see where that is....all my reading says Alice is in stage 2, and some vets don't recommend doing anything with diet at this stage. I love Fancy Feast, my diabetic Sally, who I had on the FDMB forum, only ate Fancy Feast and I was afraid that some day I would be in your position, a diabetic that has kidney issues....we had her BG down to a science. She was well regulated, thanks to the advice on the board, and a rare lung cancer took her quickly at 19 or so. We tried gravy and grilled Fancy Feast this week, she ate it ok, but this morning we said, not fair. She is not eating like she normally does, she wants her pate. I am very lucky she made it this far with no major issues. I got her at my job when I was a regular vet tech; the people were bottle feeding her whole milk, she had a bad GI start! Malnourished. So even though I have other kitties, she is still my baby. She is a tiny girl also, about 6.5 - 7 pounds. I did have a kidney cat many years ago, my husband's cat. I pushed the renal diet and really and truly looking back on it she was starving. Lost a lot of weight, one night she ate potpourri off my table. It should have struck me then, but I was just listening to my vets. I said if ever I had a kidney cat again I would feed what they wanted and just do fluids.
