9/4 Boris Update - Mostly positive!

I realized this morning that I haven't provided an update on how Boris is doing! Previous thread here.

The good:
  • The Telmisarten appears to be working! His follow up UPC came back at 0.7. The vet said while this is admittedly in the grey area for proteinuria, this seems like a good dose for him because his BP came back at 160, which she feels is good given clinic stress. The concern with an increased dose would be dropping his BP to unsafe levels. We will recheck this in 3-4 months.
  • He seems to have tolerated the Convenia shot well. No apparent side effects so far.
  • His arthritis pain seems to be under control now with the Solensia. Perhaps the CKD/proteinuria (+minor infection?) was exacerbating his arthritis? Regardless, we did cancel the specialist appointment because he is doing VERY well in this regard. We can always revisit this if it worsens.
  • I did a BG curve yesterday and have now dropped his Lantus dose to .25 units, so I'm cautiously optimistic that he'll go into remission again!
The bad:
The food change has been a disaster. He refuses to eat anything else, and will instead push into his brother's feeder to eat what Tazz has. Right now we are doing Friskies pate and Young Again dry (which he is not a huge fan of, but will eat). I'm going to try him on some Weruva again next week to see if we can get him to eat it now that he seems to be feeling better overall, but I'm not hopeful. I'd start to change his food this weekend, but we will be out of the RV a lot and I won't be here to monitor as closely as I'd like.

I'm considering trying one of the prescription diets, but really don't want to mess with his diabetes - that's trending in such a positive direction! However, it seems to me that slowing the progression of CKD is more important than getting him into remission; we can cover a higher BG with insulin if really needed.

The good news is I think the crisis mode has passed, and once we get the food thing squared away we can get into maintenance mode. At least that's my hope!

That good section is all great news, I’m so happy to read that! Fingers crossed for remission too I am so thankful for that with Pookey.

I’m checking in on his labs on my phone and the numbers are a bit small so I’ll check later. But remind me what would be the goal of the food change, to lower the phosphorus? His creatinine and BUN look early stage. I’d have to check on my computer too but is that Friskies pate too high in phos? Maybe there’s something outside of the Weruva, that is low carb and lower phos than the Friskies. You’d just hate to potentially bump up his BG which I’m sure has impacts his overall system. Unless he were in a dire state with the kidneys. It’s so hard to know.

Thanks for the update I had been wondering how things were going :bighug:
