Hi all,
My name is Tim, and my cat's name is Pookey. He is a 14 year old male, late-Stage 2 kidney disease. Pookey is also a diabetic currently in remission, and is 16 lbs with no other ailments.
Below are his BUN, creatinine, and phosphorus levels. Most recent bloodwork was about a month ago (11/7/2025).
The vet is recommending Hydracare and a low-protein diet. I'm on board with upping the hydration level, so we've been adding more water to his meals and snacks. But the low-protein diet will be a challenge for us with the diabetes. I'm not sure a low-carb, low-protein diet exists. What ingredients would it even be made of?
What I've gathered is that we're probably a little short in hydration. He gets roughly 260g of food per day, website lists 84% moisture, so that's 218mL of water from food. It's close to 14 tablespoons of water that I add extra, another 200mL, for a total of ~400mL.
Any other thoughts or suggestions are welcome. Thank you!
- Tim
