Hi all,

Previous:
6/7 - Pookey - Eating more low phos food

Got the lab results back from the vet visit last week and things are stable overall. The main marker I'm looking at is phosphorus. It increased from 5.0 in March to now 6.0.

The vet is not recommending a phosphorus binder because his value is within range on the PDF (2.9 - 6.3). That's much different than basically everything I've read online. The veterinary papers and other sources say 6.0 is the take action number and ideally you want them under 5.0. So it sounds like if I'm going to address the phosphorus, I'm going to have to go a little rogue. That's okay. I ordered Catney One (lanthanum carbonate) and aluminum hydroxide to see which one he prefers. I also ordered Porus One because I've been dragging my feet about starting that.

Of course I typed all that about binders and now I'm thinking, maybe another strategy would be to try to get him eating more of the lower-phos Weruva. It's like half the phosphorus of the Fancy Feast he normally eats. But of course, he doesn't like it as much. I don't want to jump the gun over one value in an otherwise relatively stable situation.

I guess I'd love to hear from others what you would do or have done.

Curious, did the vet mention anything about switching Pookey’s food? To either reduce the phos or protein?

I’ve also gone ahead and ordered some Porus One. Since I don’t feel comfortable switching Trixie’s food to a renal diet, my hopes is that the Porus One can at least catch the byproducts produced by the protein she’s eating and lighten the load on her kidneys.

Not really. I think she’d have him eat the renal diet, but I feel the same way. So far so good today though he’s had probably 75% Weruva. The Porus One just got here too I’ll let you know how it goes.

Hey Tim, got my order of Porus One order today and made me wonder how things are going with Pookey. Have you started that or the phos binder yet?
I have not. I’m working on a transition to more Weruva first (and been busy with my day job :cautious:). But soon, at least for the Porus.
